Help us GROW the neighborhood!
THERE GROWS THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Sweet Water News

Fall at The Commonwealth has brought new flows, visitors, and activities. This fall, the SWF team focused on education and outreach, including relaunch of the Seeding the Future program in nearby elementary schools. From creating new lesson plans, to connecting and re-connecting with educators, to hosting onsite activities with local youth; SWF is engaging young learners virtually and in-person at The Commonwealth.  We have also begun to refine our indoor spaces, including our three hoop houses on the Community Farm where seedlings and crops that will sustain our neighbors and team for the entire winter are already growing.

Last, but far from least, Sweet Water Foundation hosted the official opening of We The Publics...from Bounded Rationality to Unbounded Possibilities. The exhibit has already welcomed hundreds of visitors and its contents have been incorporated into graduate and undergraduate courses and architecture studios at Northeastern University, University of Chicago, and MIT. SWF also welcomed a cohort of RND Research interns from four universities, who will engage in a year-long exploration of We the Publics... and SWF's practice of Regenerative Neighborhood Development.

We invite you to read on to learn more about Fall 2021 at The Commonwealth.

RECIPES

RED BEANS & RICE WITH COLLARD GREENS

This year at The Commonwealth, we grew red and black beans on the Community Farm. According to Medical News Today, beans are a good source of protein that is especially important to support vegetarian and vegan diets. This fall, the SWF team and neighbors spent countless hours shucking red and black beans that can be stored and used throughout the entire winter.

Beans have also been a staple during weekly cooking demonstrations by SWF Global Fellow, Ali and Mama Aissatou. On a cool day, beans, greens, and rice are a warm and hearty lunch. This month, we invite you to try out this recipe for Red Beans and Rice with Collard Greens by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine that is similar to beans and greens that have been prepared at The Commonwealth. Enjoy this recipe with warm rice!
