Association of Black Psychologists Harambee at The Commonwealth

On Saturday, September 25, Sweet Water Foundation welcomed the Association of Black Psychologists Harambee at The Commonwealth. More than 30 psychologists, educators, parents, and neighbors participated in the event which included tours of The Commonwealth, art-making activities, and, of course, food. The participants also connected with old and new friends and had an opportunity to learn more about the Association of Black Psychologists. Read more about the event.

In the spring of 2021, Mama Afua began volunteering at The Commonwealth every Wednesday. Each week, she connected with SWF Apprentices, Fellows, Core Team members, and other SWF Community members. She has become an integral part of the SWF Family, so when she asked if Sweet Water Foundation would host the Association of Black Psychologists Harambee at The Commonwealth, the answer was, of course, “Yes”.

In preparation for the event, Mama Afua connected with the Sweet Water Foundation team to brainstorm activities for the day, discuss menu options, and of course, support the beautification of The Commonwealth. Mama Afua wanted to emphasize that healing takes many forms and that a place like The Commonwealth is a demonstration of the many avenues for healing and connection.

Healing and connection happens organically at The Commonwealth. For example, every week Mama Afua, other regular volunteers, and SWF core team members form a circle on the farm to shuck beans or participate in other hands-on activities. As they work, they also connect through stories, songs, and ideas.

On September 25, ABPsi Harambee participants had an opportunity to experience healing and connections at The Commonwealth. The group gathered in The Courtyard to meet and reconnect with each other and enjoy the sounds of a live, participatory drum circle. Participants also had an opportunity to tour The Commonwealth, including a visit to SWF’s newest exhibit in the Thought Barn, We The Publics…from Bounded Rationality to Unbounded Possibilities, and participate in hands-on activities such as seed saving and printmaking using leaves of plants found at The Commonwealth. At the end of the afternoon, the group shared a meal prepared by SWF Global Fellow, Ali Klieche. He prepared a Chard and Kale Salad, Brown Rice, Chickpea Stew, and Caribbean Greens with Cabbage, with ingredients harvested directly from the Community Farm.

Sweet Water Foundation looks forward to welcoming ABPsi members in the future and is grateful to all attendees and, especially the SWF team for supporting the event.
