THERE GROWS THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Sweet Water News

After an amazing summer, the Sweet Water team has shifted to new routines and fall formations. The summer of 2022 featured SWF's Fifth Annual Juneteenth Celebration, a national convening of SWF's Values-Based Partners network, the opening of Civic Arts Church, and our summer Urban Ecology Global Fellows program.  As sunflowers and tomatoes begin to fade on the farm, we are  preparing indoor spaces to grow during the winter and refining our carpentry lesson plans for future workshops and production.

The onset of fall, has also brought forth a new year for SWF's Communiversity.  This fall, the Communiversity is working with students and faculty at Cornell University and Northeastern University, and engaging practitioners from across the country in hands-on build projects. In September, SWF hosted students from Cornell University and practitioners from D-Town Farms in Detroit for hands-on immersion experiences at The Commonwealth. We also began hosting weekly arts + culture classes in Civic Arts Church, beginning with African Dance with Mama Aissatou Bey.

As the weather begins to cool down, we invite you to take a moment to read about the happenings at The Commonwealth!

RECIPES

Homemade Hot Sauce

This year, we planted many varieties of hot peppers and they continue to be in abundance at The Commonwealth!  There's no better way to keep enjoying the flavor and spice of late summer peppers than to preserve them as hot sauce.

On a recent Civic Arts Friday, the SWF community engaged in a hot sauce workshop.  Participants prepared peppers for an easy-to-do fermentation process and tasted a pre-made bottle of homemade SWF Hot Sauce.  The recipe linked below also provides a quick cook method if you'd prefer to skip the fermentation process.

We invite you to try this recipe for Homemade Hot Sauce from Wholefully.

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 pounds peppers of your choosing (a mix of sweet peppers and hot peppers), tops/stems removed, halved
  • 6 cloves garlic, peeled
  • 4 cups filtered water
  • 4 teaspoons sea salt
  • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup, optional
  • 1/2 teaspoon xanthan gum, optional (see notes)
